by SAMUEL O. TAIWO
“But I will forewarn you Whom ye shall fear: fear him which after he hath killed hath power to cast into Hell. Yeah, I say unto you, FEAR HIM“
Upon a nebular capped mountain sudd’
Stood I, a-freighted, by wonderment paled;
Of what I saw, bleak in my heart enshrined
I feign can well relate e’en to this day.
But I shall into this course my best hurl
If ought I this might by trying espouse
To wit: The flames of bleak eternity
The deafening screams, the vents of burning souls,
The filthy dustbin of the Almighty,
The dreaded, mystery labyrinths of Hell.
My eyes were opened as by spirits yon’
I chanced on the forbidden underworld;
In celestial or in terrestrial frame
Till date, O brotherman, I cannot tell.
Yet, this I know, that from my vantage point
Of rocks like Old Babel’s pride, high towering,
A throng of dead men walking I espied
I saw the dead, I saw both small and great
In a queue stretcht’, to th’ horizon fading,
By earth forgotten, by heav’n rejected,
With chalk-bleached eyes like flies, a-buzzing, hummed,
Clad in stark nudity and tempestuous
Sped they, the bestial throng, a-ragging swept
By surest gravity to Hell’s chasm.
Most stygian precipice of smoke it was
Boiling liquid fire ever whirring
(Immortal to Nebuchadnezzar’s flames
With scotching volcanic vent, pulsating
And belching putrid stench of burning flesh,
Of souls on earth dead, now in damnation)
From which rose that opaque, serpentine fog.
The rodor veiling like The Plague The Ninth
Of Mizra’m; the doomed their sight obscuring
Unbeknownst to them a-thronging they presst’
Till with drowning echoes like gushing damns
Headlong fell to th’ abysmal inferno,
Like those who before them went down in time,
And they, alighting in such hurrid pits
Bust into crimson human fireballs!
I, this strange sight beheld with utmost awe
With eyes bulging, spell bound by what I saw.
“So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth”.
